Digital Homelands Singapore [2008]

A video project commissioned by the National Heritage Board for the National Museum of Singapore.

Description

How does an aging 30 year-old neighbourhood face the competition amidst newer towns and fancy suburban heartlands?

'5 by 5' aka 5 hours in 5 mins, takes us to Boon Lay.

Makan! That's exactly what Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak serves in this neighbourhood to help keep Boon Lay ripe in the competition. Between the hours of 10am to 3am, this family-run gem from the humble hawker center has successfully satisfied nocturnal cravings with its traditional gastronomical servings, spicy enough to attract the crowd residing in the competition from different corners of the island.

Watch the buzz created by a combined scoop of the nasi lemak and a power stroke of the sambal belacan, making it very hard to bypass Boon Lay.

Music: "The Four Seasons", by Vivaldi

The purest cinema is one of gesture, glance, reaction - a sense of riveting interiority deployed by exterior action.
